BCBA training parents at home

Why Parent Training Matters

Your child spends a few hours a week in therapy, but the rest of their time is with you. Parent training bridges the gap between therapy sessions and everyday life, ensuring that learning happens around the clock.

Consistency Across Settings

When parents use the same strategies as therapists, children learn faster because expectations and responses are predictable everywhere.

Better Communication

You will understand your child's behavior on a deeper level. This insight transforms frustration into connection and problem-solving.

Faster Progress

Research shows that parent involvement accelerates treatment outcomes. Your participation directly impacts how quickly your child gains skills.

Lasting Skills

The strategies you learn will serve your family for years. As your child grows and new challenges arise, you will have a toolkit ready.

Training Topics

What You Will Learn

Our training covers the core principles of ABA and teaches you how to apply them in your daily life with your child.

Understanding Behavior

Learn why behaviors happen. We teach you to identify what triggers behaviors, what maintains them, and how to respond effectively.

Positive Reinforcement

Master the art of meaningful praise and rewards. Discover what motivates your child and how to use reinforcement to build new skills.

Prompting and Fading

Know when and how to help your child succeed without creating dependence. Learn to provide just enough support and then step back systematically.

Managing Challenging Behaviors

Develop strategies for tantrums, aggression, self-injury, and other difficult behaviors. Stay calm, stay safe, and reduce these behaviors over time.

Teaching Communication

Whether your child uses words, signs, pictures, or a device, learn how to encourage communication throughout the day.

Building Independence

Help your child do more for themselves. From self-care to household tasks, learn to teach skills that lead to greater autonomy.

The Process

How Parent Training Works

Parent training is delivered by your child's supervising BCBA. Sessions can happen in your home, at our clinic, or via telehealth, depending on what works best for your schedule.

Training is tailored to your child's current treatment goals. If your child is working on communication, we focus on how you can create opportunities and reinforce communication attempts throughout the day. If challenging behaviors are a priority, we teach you specific prevention and response strategies.

We do not just lecture. Training is hands-on. You will practice strategies with your BCBA present, receive feedback, and refine your approach until you feel confident using techniques independently.

Training Formats

1
Direct Coaching

The BCBA observes you interacting with your child and provides real-time feedback and guidance.

2
Didactic Sessions

We explain concepts and strategies, often using handouts, videos, or demonstrations to make learning clear.

3
Review and Problem-Solving

We discuss what is working, what is not, and collaborate on adjustments to keep your child progressing.

The Real Impact of Parent Involvement

Studies consistently show that when parents are actively involved in ABA therapy, children make faster and more lasting progress.

When you learn to implement strategies at home, your child gets hundreds of additional learning opportunities every week. Those opportunities add up. They make the difference between progress that stays in therapy and progress that transforms daily life.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is parent training required?

Most insurance plans require a minimum number of parent training hours. Beyond requirements, participation is strongly encouraged because it significantly improves outcomes. However, we understand that schedules are tight, and we work with you to make training accessible.

What if both parents cannot attend?

We encourage whoever is available to participate. Information can be shared with other caregivers, and we can provide written summaries. We also offer flexible scheduling and can sometimes accommodate evening or weekend sessions.

Do you offer training for grandparents or other caregivers?

Yes. Anyone who spends significant time with your child can benefit from training. Consistency across all caregivers leads to better outcomes. We welcome grandparents, nannies, and other family members.

How long does parent training take?

Training is ongoing throughout your child's time in therapy. Initial sessions focus on foundational skills, but as your child's program evolves, we continue teaching new strategies. Most families have at least one training session per month.

Can training be done remotely?

Yes, we offer telehealth parent training sessions. These can be especially convenient for follow-up meetings, reviewing data, or discussing strategies when schedules are tight.
